An Inside Look at Bobby's Journey in Retail Agriculture
What drew you to the agriculture industry?
During my childhood, my parents were involved in farming. I was primarily surrounded by tobacco and some row crop farming throughout my life. As I grew older and my parents stopped farming, I realized, after trying a few other jobs, that being involved in farming was where I truly wanted to be.
What aspects of farming do you find most fulfilling?
I truly enjoy seeing any type of crop being planted and observing its growth from the moment it sprouts from the ground until it is harvested, knowing that I contributed to that process.
Can you give provide an overview of your role and key responsibilities within the Co-op?
I am responsible for managing the Cottage Grove location, ensuring timely fertilizer application and completion of spray applications. I also make sure that we have a sufficient stock of products such as chemicals and fertilizer. Additionally, I am responsible for keeping the equipment in good condition and maintaining the facility.
How does the Co-op’s mission and values influence your work?
The Co-Op has played a significant role in shaping who I am today and has motivated me to consistently give my all. My experience here has instilled in me both ambition and confidence. I've been given many goals, and I never look back until I have achieved those goals—or at least given my best effort.
What’s something about your role that people might not realize?
My position at HFC carries significant responsibility. It involves engaging with employees, overseeing inventory, and ensuring everything runs smoothly.
Can you share a success story or accomplishment you’re particularly proud of?
A success story that I'm most fond of isn't probably like some others of other people, mine is more personal. Three years ago, I was diagnosed with stage 3 throat cancer. After going through some extensive surgery and several different procedures, today I am cancer free. This was a long road with some very trying times—but I set new goals for myself every day during that time. I did overcome, never gave up, and today I am very proud of that!
What activities do you enjoy outside of work? Do you have any hobbies or interests?
Outside of work, my favorite pastime is spending time with my grandkids. I love taking them fishing or for rides on the side-by-side. I also really enjoy cooking various types of food on my smoker; cooking is a passion of mine. I've also recently discovered that I enjoy traveling to new places.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone new to the industry?
A key piece of advice for anyone new: Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Technology presents fresh and exciting challenges daily! But it's not just about technology; personal growth requires stepping out of your comfort zone.
