As growers across the region prepare for the 2025 planting season, ensuring crops receive the right nutrients is essential. Among the many vital fertilizers, Nitrogen (N) stands out as a key macronutrient crucial for plant growth and productivity. Adequate Nitrogen levels enhance yields and support overall plant function.


Without sufficient nitrogen, plants struggle to develop strong stems, lush foliage, and healthy root systems, ultimately impacting overall crop performance. Proper Nitrogen management not only maximizes yield potential but also improves soil health and long-term sustainability.

Timing of Nitrogen Application

As the planting season nears, the timing and methods of application are crucial for maximizing Nitrogen effectiveness, particularly for corn. Nitrogen can be applied at various times—before planting, during the growing season, or through split applications. Applying nitrogen at the optimal time is vital for enhancing its effectiveness. Farmers have several strategies for nitrogen application that they can use:


Pre-planting (early spring): While pre-planting applications are preferred to some Growers due to the lower risk of N loss, it can also be a time of large N loss due to wet soil.


In-Season: This method involves applying Nitrogen during the growing season, known as sidedress or topdress application.

  • A sidedress application places a concentrated band of Nitrogen into the soil near the plant row using a specialized applicator, providing immediate access to Nitrogen and reducing nutrient leaching.

  • In contrast, a topdress application spreads fertilizer across the field surface with a spin-type spreader, ensuring even distribution, although some granules may land on the leaves.


Split Application: This approach to Nitrogen application involves distributing the doses across various growth stages rather than applying them all at once. Typically, the process begins with an application at or before planting, followed by additional applications as the crops develop. This approach enhances nitrogen usage by reducing leaching and denitrification losses because nitrogen is applied only when the crop needs it.


Regular monitoring of soil health and plant progress is vital for determining nitrogen needs. Conducting soil tests can reveal your soil's nitrogen levels, allowing for informed decisions about application timing and amounts.


Different types of Nitrogen fertilizers

Choosing the best nitrogen fertilizers involves a careful consideration of several critical factors, including soil type, climate conditions, available equipment, and budget constraints. Each of these elements plays a significant role in determining which fertilizer will be most effective for your specific agricultural needs. In the springtime, there are three primary types of nitrogen fertilizers that are commonly utilized: anhydrous ammonia, urea, and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN).
